CENTER FOR POVERTY REDUCTION

Making a difference by providing Access to human development Opportunities

Our Mission

The Center for Poverty Reduction (CPR) is a nonprofit and non-governmental organization, which is committed to poverty reduction via access to human development opportunities.

What We Do

Small Loans
Extending small loans (microcredit) to individuals for small and medium scale enterprises via a broad range of financial services in order to attain self-sufficiency and sustainable development; based on a demand-driven approach or bottom-up participatory method with emphasis on agricultural, manufacturing, and service sectors.
Job Banks
  • Providing access to employment and income generating opportunities in the formal and informal sectors, especially for youths - college and/or university graduates through internship programs and benchmarking in order to enhance knowledge, skills and abilities to perform respective tasks.
  • CPR engages both private and public sectors in activites to reduce unemployment and underemployment by providing access to vocational skills development programs with respect to proprietorships, agricultural employment programs, special needs training for the disabled and the elderly as well as seminars in personal financial management.
Healthcare Delivery
  • Providing access to affordable healthcare, particularly, preventive healthcare for the children and families in such areas as:
  • Reproductive Health - reducing infant mortality, improving maternal healthcare to reduce mortality for mothers during childbirth through teenage and adult health education.
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention - through outreach programs with community hospitals, churches, seminars, workshops, conferences and mass media.
  • Female Health Education - Prevention Campaigns, especially, through mass media.
  • Better Nutrition - and access to safe or potable drinking water as well as clean sanitation with emphasis on indoor utilities.
General Programs
Providing direct access to capacity building by assisting and collaborating with indigenous public and private sectors via public-private partnership, as well as cooperating with international development agencies, foundations, civil societies and other NGOs in delivering services to the poor. For example, the CPR assists educational institutions (primary, secondary, and tertiary) by providing access to books, e-technology, self-esteem awards and financial aid for tuition and infrastructure maintenance; especially for the poor and/or neglected schools and colleges in rural and urban areas. Finally, the CPR engages in socio-economic research with respect to poverty reduction in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Program Participants

Given the declining rate of income and rising population, poverty rate in SSA continues to rise. Despite a plethora of development programs: access to opportunities has decreased in education, employment, and health, especially for the needy. As a result, the Center for Poverty Reduction (CPR) strives to find sustainable solutions for the multi-dimensional problems that form poverty. Program participants include (but are not limited to) women, children, youths, and HIV/AIDS patients.

Our Guiding Values

Essentially, the CPR is guided by the following values in the pursuit of its vision:

  • Reducing human suffering through charitable giving.
  • Preserving and improving the quality of life.
  • We are dedicated to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
  • We are committed to a bottom-up participatory approach to poverty reduction.
  • We adhere to the philosophy as articulated by Maya Angelou, "When you learn, teach. When you get, give."
"When you learn, teach. When you get, give."
- Maya Angelou
